WMMS Behavior Support Program in a Nutshell
Behavior Support Teacher: Anna Baughman
Behavior Support TA: Mr. Joyner
BST Room: Trailer 6
How do I contact the BST when needed?
If there is an instance in your classroom where you are in need of BST support, call the BST trailer and let Mrs. Baughman or Mr. Joyner know that you need assistance. Once the BST has received your phone call, she will come to your classroom and process with the student for re-entry into the classroom. Depending on the significance of the behavior, another option is to refer a student to the BST classroom. If this option is necessary, always call the BST classroom before sending a student to make sure the BST or BST TA is present. If no one is present when you call, please contact the front office and someone will get a hold of Mrs. Baughman.
Who can I send to the BST’s room?
The only students who can be sent to Mrs. Baughman’s room are those on her IEP caseload. These students have behavior goals in their current IEP and exhibit severe behavioral/emotional problems that inhibit them from accessing the general curriculum without support. If a student is receiving behavior support services and is in one of your classes, you will receive a cover letter, goals, and accommodations/modifications from Mrs. Baughman. If you have a question as to whether a student is on the BST caseload please do not hesitate to ask. *Please note that if a student is on the BST caseload they MAY NOT be sent to ALC*
What disciplinary actions do I take with students on the BST’s caseload?
In order for these students to receive the best education possible they need to remain in your classroom to the greatest extent possible. That being said, there are cases when a student must be removed from your room. Prior to sending a student to the BST room you MUST first contact Mrs. Baughman to advise that the student is on his/her way AND send the work he/she will be missing. If the behavior is significant enough to warrant a classroom removal to the BST trailer, the following must also take place:
1. Phone call to the BST room to describe the behavior that has resulted in the classroom removal
2. A behavior referral in ECATS must be completed and referred to Mrs. Baughman
3. Parent contact (see me if you need contact info for any of my students)
Can students also decide when a visit with the BST is necessary?
Absolutely! Some students will have a visual symbol to let you know that they need to conference with Mrs. Baughman. These students will be familiarized with the process of using the cue cards and will have a limit as to how many times these cards can be used during a certain class period over a specified number of days (this will be dependent on the student and his/her problem behavior). Students must use appropriate behaviors to use their passes, which may include: flashing a card to you and leaving the room, leaving a card on his/her desk, or leaving the card on your desk to let you know where they are heading. Many times, these students are so angry or upset that they physically cannot use their words to tell you where they are going. PLEASE work with the student if card usage should become necessary (and call the BST trailer or the office to make sure someone is here for them).
